EAGI Research Initiative: Language, Toponymy, and Artificial Intelligence

The A.K. Kussayinov Eurasian Humanities Institute is carrying out an independent research project titled “Creating a Database of Vernacular Toponyms Using Artificial Intelligence Technologies (Based on the Examples of Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom)” under the direction of S.E. Davletova.

As part of the research, vernacular toponyms from Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom are being analyzed, and their lexical-semantic, cognitive, and communicative features are being studied. One focus of the work is the application of artificial intelligence tools for processing and systematizing research data.

To date, the conceptual framework of the project has been established, criteria for selecting toponyms have been developed, and work is underway to create a pilot corpus comprising 80–100 toponymic units.

The research aims to create a modern database that can serve as a foundation for further scientific research in the fields of toponymy, linguistics, and digital technologies.
